May Adventures

This is my third weekend in Portland. First two weekends, I was still moving stuff in and being drop-dead exhausted and trying to find grocery stores that I liked.

Finally getting dressed up again has brought many things to my attention. For example, when I wear lolita and then have to go prepare food, I would wear my Pusheen apron. I left it back at my Mom’s house. Also, where the heck did I put all of my jewelry? I packed it, and I remember seeing it once here and unpacking. But did I pack it up again? Which box did I put it in?

Anyway, today I wore a Little Dipper half blouse, Cat’s Broom The Secret Garden High Waist JSK, lace socks, pink heels from Amazon, and two petticoats- one being The Black Ribbon petticoat I got last Christmas. The other was just a lame one from Amazon, however pictured above is JUST TBR petticoat. It is a somewhat incomplete outfit, since no jewelry or wrist accessories, and I am not happy with how my hair looked. I really should just wear it down, but we were grocery shopping today. I wore both petticoats out grocery shopping, then came home and removed one of them and then took coord pictures.  I also feel unsure about ankle socks every time I wear them, but I think this turned out okay.

However, I felt like I could fit into a JSK a bit better than before. Also, I seem to be attracted to this particular dress whenever I am about to do something new.   My boyfriend graciously took pictures of me today, which is why I have actual full coord pictures.  I am hopefully going to get a full length mirror soon so I don’t have to bug him to do this, but the pictures I ended up posting here and on my instagram looked really good. He caught a few natural looking poses, unlike the usual stiff and awkward ones that get taken when I ask people to take my picture. I am really grateful for him. ❤

I am starting to feel a cold coming on, which may be tradition for me now in late May. So I got some cup noodles because warm soup is good for colds. Chicken tortilla flavor, so it was supposed to be spicy but I am not buying it! Right now, I am already feeling better so maybe I am cured. Hah. Fluid and rest is the answer.

Today’s mission was to go investigate a stationary shop called Little Otsu, in the Richmond neighborhood. It wasn’t too hard to get to, but parking sucked. That is a theme of bigger cities, so not too surprising.  It has lots of notebooks that come in plain, lined, grid and dot grid. Dot grid is the hot new thing, and I really like it. They carry the MD Midori A5 grid notebooks, which are pretty sweet notebooks.  They also have the Stalogy 018 365 days notebook, which I have heard is like a poor man’s hobonichi.  For 2019, I want to do a one page a day scrapbook-type diary, which I have seen other bloggers do and it is really cute.  I can get them online, but it is always so nice to see things in person before buying it.

The other half of the mission was to go to a bakery!

We then went to St. Honoré Boulangerie, which is a French bakery with several locations.  This one was right down the street, and was very cute.  We just got a few pastries to go, which we ate once we got home. Shown above are a strawberry mille feuille, and a limited edition caramel chocolate St Honoré (it’s a pastry covered in chocolate mousse, caramel whip cream and tiny chocolate choux also filled with chocolate cream). It was delicious!

Next weekend is Summer ILD, so I will think of something fun to do and get dressed up for. Maybe go find another bakery to get treats from.

Popin’ Cookin’ Tanoshii Donuts

These kits have been around forever and are easy enough to find in the US if you have a local Asian market.  The Kracie Popin’ Cookin’ kits! I got one to do for Valentine’s Day, but then was lazy. So I did the kit today.

I actually tried one of these kits a few years back, when the instructions were all in Japanese. I know these are super easy to find now because the instructions on the box were all English. Heh.

Cut up the plastic piece to separate the parts out and follow instructions.

All of the pieces of the kit to mix things in. There is also a pink spatula to mix things with. All you need is some water!

Donuts are made, plus the tubs of icing and choco sauce, and crumbs and sprinkles, all ready.

They are pretty cute.

But what do they taste like? Imagine eating raw cookie dough or cake batter (I know you do this even if the instructions tell you not to!), but it is gummier and just unpleasant. That is what this is like. Unpleasant to eat. :< I ate one of the donuts just to remember how gross they are. Tried to eat a second donut but spit it out.

The frosting actually tastes okay. The pink strawberry frosting tastes like the stuff on strawberry pocky – that extra fake strawberry flavor. The little crumbs and sprinkles taste ok, but the doughnut dough is just gross. Especially the chocolate dough.

I really just wanted to decorate cute tiny donuts.  I think there are similar kits out there, only instead of it making food, it just makes decoden plastic pieces, or erasers.  So this is how I wasted $4 on some dumb nasty tiny donuts.  I did buy better chocolate to eat for Valentine’s Day too though, so it’s not like it was a total loss.

Bakery Meetup

Yesterday I went to a meetup at a vegan bakery called Mudpie.  It was with the com I am less familiar with, so I was a little nervous. Usually, they dress much better than I do, plus the whole thing about being nervous around new people.  But it is good practice for when I have to pick up my entire life and move to a new timezone.

My first coord of 2018 is…lackluster.  I am wearing Fanplusfriend’s Puck’s Prank JSK (with the flower applique on part of the bodice but I am covering it up with the cardigan), an H&M blouse (covered) and cardigan that does not perfectly match. My teaparty shoes are from Sosic Shop. Wearing tights are fleece lined tights because it is cold. I did actually plan to wear exactly this because I have gained a few pounds over the holidays, and decided I would rather wear something that fits comfortably.  Also using the questionable Aliexpress petticoat here.

The ribbon pin was originally from a beret I never wore, and since I was going to originally wear a headbow, I tried to make the cardigan look a little more cute. It was a moot point, because I decided the headbow looked weird and stupid on my head. It returned to the beret, and I decided to try wearing it.

Consensus is that yes, I am wearing this beret okay and it looks cute. Actually, I really like it. I am thinking of getting more berets in different colors to wear with other outfits now.

I was really worried that I was going to stick out like a sore thumb with my mediocre outfit, but there there was a range of outfits, so I did not feel like the worst dressed one of all (like I was prepared to be). But everyone at the meet was really nice, and that is what is most important. It’s especially nice to meet people in person when you have seen them post in the FB groups and finally be able to put a name to a face.

Everyone got a chocolate chip scone. Not sure if this is one of the vegan or gluten-free items, as I just panicked and picked something that looked tasty. I am trying to get into the habit of looking up menus online before I go somewhere so I can budget a bit better, but Mudpie just says that the daily baked good selection changes daily. Okay~ It was really good though.

Overall, I had a good time, and I am excited to go to more meets. That is kind of the way I feel after all meets though. I think most of them have been pretty good, regardless of which group I am meeting up.  I am pretty fortunate that nothing too crazy or dramatic happens at meetups, and that people I know usually aren’t involved with any drama online.

Unrelated rant now. I usually take pictures on my phone and then transfer to Google Drive/Backup and Sync and upload to imgur on my laptop.  However, Backup and Sync likes to somehow turn itself off and then I can’t get it to work again without reinstalling it. So I decided to see if I should just download the Imgur app so I can upload directly from my phone. It will not allow me to upload images and add them to an already existing album- so I would have to make a new album every time I upload multiple pictures. ಠ▃ಠ And I just noticed my text face app in Chrome deleted all the text faces I custom added to it. Why. I am not succeeding at technology today…

Winter International Lolita Day 2017

It has been one year since my first meetup! I think I have improved dramatically.

Today’s coord was Angelic Pretty Rose Museum Special Set JSK, a blouse from Soufflesong, Antaina shoes, the new petticoat from Aliexpress, plain white tights (things that will never change…) and a flower headband from Sweet Dreamer (cannot find it anymore).  Also wearing two pearl bracelets and a pearl chain necklace I made.

How is it possible that I am so terrible at posing. I was even trying to stand up straight and not look so awkward. Also, my face looked especially stupid here, so it is now a cupcake.

We had tea at Anna Marie’s tea house, so this is the third time I’ve gone to tea here. I am still impressed.

We even got Christmas crackers. I have never done one before.  How it works is that you cross your arms, and then each of the people next to you also cross their arms, so each pair of hands is holding a Christmas cracker. Once you are in a circle, everyone pulls at the same time and POP~! Inside, there is a dumb plastic toy, a paper crown and some bad jokes.  This is an old tradition from Great Britain, and is the inspiration for the Party Hats worth millions and millions of gold in Runescape (at least back when I played it 10+ years ago).

As always, food was delicious. We had Christmas tea, which was tasty. Not precisely sure what flavors were in it. and their website does not seem to specify a single Christmas tea. We also had turkey apple sandwiches, roast red pepper and spinach sandwiches, cheese pennies, scones with mock cream, snowball cookies, a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting, and cranberry orange bread. It was good, and it is always good. I like to daydream about making a bunch of cute little tea snacks and sweets and doing my own tea, but I am lazy.  Maybe in 2018, I will try to do that.

A detailed shot of my shoes from Antaina.  I actually bought these to wear at Nakakon earlier this year, but they didn’t get here in time. Finally wore them today. I usually get size 41 shoes from Sosic Shop, but these are size 42. They are a little bit loose, but they were fairly comfortable.  These shoes are the type where the straps have metal snaps, so switching between these and flats for driving is pretty easy, just make sure to adjust the straps so they fit well.  There was a small scallop by the back of my ankle where the blue coating had already fallen off, and this was the first time wearing them out (I did wear them in my house for a short period of time earlier this year). That is a little disappointing.  At this point, I think I have all the shoes I really need (maybe some gold shoes to match a few things in the future but I am in no rush), but I will probably stick to Sosic Shop for shoes, unless there is something they do not make (for example…gold shoes).

Over the past month, there was talk on my com’s page about doing a gift swap. As I am trying to save money, I never commented that I didn’t want to do one.  Thus, my first mistake. I was hoping it would be forgotten. It was brought up again at the last minute. If I had more time, I would have made gifts. I am already embroidering tons of things, so I could have made handkercheifs. But I waited until the very last minute, so this morning, I ran out to buy some very basic cheap gifts that I though could be pretty “one size fits all” like lip balm and hand lotion. It is winter, so these things will come in handy (so I hope). I made up gift bags, and behold, I have completely misunderstood. The gift exchange was supposed to be more like a white elephant, where everyone brings a gift and then they are passed around until an arbitrary time and then you get what you are holding. Oops. So half of the people just brought nothing, and then of us who remained, half brought a gift to pass around, and then those of us who brought small gifts for everyone.

I gave everyone a little gift bag, and then in the gift passing (it doesn’t really feel like a gift exchange), we tried on a pair of shoes.  One girl won the shoes, but they were a totally different size from what she could wear. The shoes were size 41, so I tried them on, but they were WAY too small. They ended up going to a different girl who wears size 39.  That girl then passed the necklace (shown above) to me because she doesn’t have anything to wear it with. I don’t have anything that deep shade of purple, but I still like it. And then we all got lollipops.

After tea, we toured the tea house and took pictures, and then drove all the way across town to a Christmas light exhibit in a park.  I would not have planned these two things on the same day, however there were good reasons it had to be this way, so I was mentally prepared for the drive.  It was actually really beautiful, but crowded. It was worth it though, and I had a really good time.

I was feeling really sick yesterday, so I was worried about how much energy I would have for today, but everything went great today.  I am a little sad, since this might be the last meet I have, since we might be moving sometime. Maybe I will still be in town, or maybe 1000 miles away.  But this has been a good year and I am really grateful.

Thanksgiving

My family held Thanksgiving this past weekend, and it was really wonderful. Also, this was the first time I intentially wore lolita around my family!  Although, a very, very toned down coord, but it was something.

I am wearing F+F’s Puck’s Prank OP and a (gasp) normie blouse I got some somewhere. Plain tights and bow flats.  The petticoat is one I got for cheap from Aliexpress with the intention of sewing two together to make a super fluffy one. Actually, this petticoat is fairly decent.

Wearing this dress, I was reminded of how much I love this dumb OP that isn’t really an OP. I am so tempted to go buy the other colorway of it. But no, I am saving my money to move/buy brand/not starve to death.

Speaking of food…

Cherry pie~

I like taking pictures of food.

Most years, my family will go around the table and talk about the things we are thankful for, but we forgot to do this, twice. I am thankful for a lot of things.  I am thankful for my Mom (even if she drives me nuts) and my brother and sister-in-law, and my boyfriend. Also thankful for my friends I’ve met over the years in Grad School and College, and my online friends, and the people in my comm. Very thankful for some of the people in my lab (very strongly the opposite of thankful for other people though).  I am also very thankful for cats. All cats. My cats, your cats, my friends cats, my boyfriend’s cat, every cat ever.

It’s been a stressful year for various reasons, but I finally got to be active in a comm and that makes me happy, so I am glad I got to do that.

Halloween Tea Party

Last weekend, I went to a Halloween Tea Party. It was nice.

So cute! The little snack at the top is candied popcorn, and the little witch hat was made of pretzel and chocolate.

The tea was Vanilla-Pumpkin flavored. I don’t like pumpkin flavor. I have never liked it, but I realized a few days before this tea that I have made a grave mistake because there is going to be pumpkin everything at this tea party. Whoops. However, this tea was pretty good, and I didn’t even have to add a ton of sugar to get over the taste. Maybe I do like pumpkin after all?

The treats are the most important part of a tea party. Here, we have garden cucumber and cream cheese sandwich, roast red pepper on striped bread sandwich, a cinnamon ginger scone with Devonshire cream, a spooky pumpkin cake (with apple filling), a sugar cookie and a petite pumpkin (it was an olive baked in cheese!). The only blatantly pumpkin-flavored thing here was the cake, and it was pretty good. I did end up putting extra cream on it. I did not like the sugar cookie, for some reason. Or rather, I ate everything else and was full so I didn’t want to eat it.

I was rushing in the morning, so I wasn’t able to get nice coord shots in my room. However, the weather was nice and we did coord shots outside the tea house.  These look okay.  I need some black wristcuffs (here I just have a bracelet), and I think a black underskirt would look better too. I thought I had lost enough weight to fit into this dress better, but I don’t like how the bodice looks strained.

The JSK is Krad Lanrete Transilvania Moonlight, and I have the matching headbow/veil. The blouse is the one from Diamond Honey I got earlier this year.  Everything else is offbrand.

I had a good time last weekend. However, I am feeling very stressed out about various things in my life. Clobba does have Krad Lanrete’s Dullahan for sale now, but I haven’t looked at it again.  I really want it, but I should not buy it.  There are actually several taobao dresses I want right now, but holding back. Partially because I am in no position to be spending money on anything for fun, and also partially because I am not happy with how I look.

2017 Japan Fest

Another October, so another Japan Festival.  This year, I brought my flat comfy shoes in my bag so I would not die in heels. Unfortunately, I died in heels anyway. ;__;

I still had fun, and am still exhausted.

Finally wore my Long Ears and Sharp Ears The Kingdom of Faeries OP. It is comfy and wonderful, even thought there were a few adjustments I had to make to it. I still need to find a long petticoat that will work a bit better also, but I think this looked pretty good.

Still have no idea how to attach this damn bow to the back of the dress, so I sewed a pin on. After having it pinned all day, it drooped, so I think I am going to have to attach more pins to it.

The veil has places for it to be buttoned to something, but the headband did not have any buttons. So I added my own damn buttons. This was actually trickier than I expected, but it seemed pretty secure, and my hair didn’t get tangled up in the buttons either, which is nice.

Something new this year were ikebana flower arrangements near the food court. They were really pretty.

I especially like the pink one on the right.

These are especially beautiful.

Last year, I ran into the problem of waiting in line for a long time and then finding out that food booth only took cash when I had no cash. ;__; It was awful. So this year, I made sure to bring plenty of cash, and went to the food court immediately. This worked out in my favor.

I got some takoyaki, and honey ribs with rice.  I have been craving takoyaki lately and didn’t think there would be any, but behold, there was! However, it tastes like the frozen takoyaki I tried once (and it was kind of gross). I wish the local restaurant that used to serve takoyaki still did. That stuff was amazing. I guess the craving for takoyaki is somewhat fulfilled.

Another display the Japan Festival has every year is bonsai tree. Bonsai trees are pretty neat.

However, this is a bonsai orchid! Look at how cute and tiny it is! °˖✧∩(◎ヮ◎∩)✧˖° I love it so much!

I ran into people from both local coms and was waiting for meet ups to happen. Eventually found a group and followed them around for awhile, and then we left to go get sushi.  The group that I hung out with forgot that I had donuts with them a few months ago, but to be fair, I wore a drastically different outfit for the festival than I did a few months ago. :p They eventually remembered me.

This was a place I had never been to before, but damn, their lunch special is fabulous. $8 for 1 roll, $13 for 3 rolls, and that includes soup or salad, and some of the best crab rangoon I have ever eaten in my entire life. Sadly, this sushi place is far from where I live, but it is near where one of my friends lives. Or it may be worth going out to anyway. Ugh, this now makes me want to go out to eat sushi again, even at the Japanese restaurant by my house. ;__;

As with all festivals and events, there were goodies to buy.

There was a Japanese bakery at the Tea Festival last month, and I got some sesame and herb cookies from them. They were so good. They also had a booth at the Japan Fest, so got more sesame cookies, and chocolate chip matcha cookies. (。ノω\。)゚ I think they are pretty simple cookies, but sesame cookies are really tasty.

Mom lost the lid to my favorite bento box awhile ago ;__; so I had looked online for a new one (and I actually found some super cute ones on Rakuten but too lazy/cheap to buy due to shipping). I found this black 2-layer at the fair for $5! That is a great price! I did have to make an elastic band for it myself, but no big deal. The cat lunch bag was $3. I think it is cuter than the lunch bag I made.

Most events, I buy a big plushie. I did not buy a big plushie even though there were some cute sloth plushies. Instead, I got two little anime figurines, and two pens with pretty designs on them.

What a happy keychain.

It was a fun day, and then I had to go home and nap so I would be alive for a work-related party afterwords (it went okay).
